Philodendron melanochrysum is a climbing aroid native to the foothills of the Andes in Colombia, where it grows in humid, tropical forests. It climbs tree trunks under the canopy, anchoring itself with aerial roots while its base remains in rich, organic soil. The environment offers filtered light, high humidity, and consistently warm temperatures year-round.
The species is recognised for its elongated, velvety leaves that can exceed 60 cm in length when mature. The leaf surface is a deep green to nearly black, accented with shimmering, pale yellow veins, while new leaves often emerge with a bronze tint. Its name, meaning "black gold," refers to the dark foliage contrasted with the golden venation.
In its natural setting, Philodendron melanochrysum produces the characteristic aroid inflorescence of a spadix and spathe, although in cultivation it is primarily grown for its foliage. Providing a vertical support allows it to climb and develop larger leaves, more closely resembling its wild growth form.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity above 70% for optimal growth.
- Media: Use a rich, free-draining aroid mix containing bark, perlite, and organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain 18-27 °C; protect from temperatures below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when roots become crowded, ensuring a suitable climbing support is in place.
